I highly value the physical education profession and believe that we, as PE practitioners, can and should have an amazing influence on the students that we teach. PE is no longer just about teaching essential skills related to sport. We have a responsibility to empower our students to believe in themselves, to deepen their understanding of the life skills that are necessary now and in the future, and to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to learn about positively interacting with others. Through the foundation of sport and fitness, we are in a position to better prepare our students for the future. I sit on the grade 3-5 advisory board for PE Central (http://www.pecentral.org) and have over 20 years of experience in both education and coaching.
Consulting/Workshops
I work with several PE programs around the world helping them to better understand the role of assessment and inquiry in PE . Essentially, my views, opinions, suggestions, and ideas are based on good teaching practice in general and are not bound by IB requirements. Good teaching practice can be immediately applied in any setting or in any national, state, or private PE curriculum. If your school is looking for new ideas to implement in your PE program, I am always willing to consult via Skype or in some cases, offering workshops when our schedules can mesh.

PYP Sharing Blog
I recently worked with the PYP Curriculum Development Team on a new Sharing PYP Practice Blog project in the Hague, Netherlands. It was an excellent experience to be involved in the process of creating this new blog for the IBO. The Sharing PYP Practice Blog was launched at the end of September and its main aim is to illustrate diverse experiences in implementing the PYP and to facilitate the connections among PYP teachers around the world. As well, I will be working with the IBO on an exciting Sample Units of Inquiry Project in the upcoming month in Florida. Working on projects such as this are so rewarding professionally and help me to connect with other good practitioners from different regions of the world. http://blogs.ibo.org/sharingpyp/

Key Considerations in the Process of Refining Assessment in PE Workshop
Where: United Nations School of Hanoi in Vietnam
When: November 2nd and 3rd, 2012
Workshop Summary
Using my own planning process and giving specific examples of the journey that I take when creating my PE units, my central ideas, lines of inquiry and assessment, I had the elementary PE team have an in-depth look at their current program and re-consider the way in which they will plan and deliver assessment in the future. Great emphasis was placed on the key concepts, related concepts, learner profile, PYP attitudes, and transdisciplinary skills throughout the two days. I tried to show how critically important it is to tie these essential components into standards and benchmarks when considering how to create more authentic assessment tasks for our students. This hands on approach enabled the teachers attending to walk away with new resources and assessment that could be immediately applied to their own program. The aim of this workshop was designed to meet the specific needs of this PE department and was collaborated on well ahead of time.
